Mandrake the Magician

I wasn't familiar with Mandrake the Magician until I read about Don Mueller in a book titled 1954: The Year Willie Mays and the First Generation of Black Superstars Changed Major League Baseball Forever.

Don Mueller had a career year in 1953 when he batted .333 only to top it in 1954 with a .342 average. Mueller earned the nickname Mandrake because he had a knack for hitting the ball through the infield for base hits.

I picked up this 1954 Topps Don Mueller card for $3 shipped.

Love that the cartoon on the back mentions his nickname.

  1. I get a kick from nicknames. I hadn't heard this one. Very cool!
